Grades 3-5. Here is an opportunity to create something new from something forgotten or unwanted. Look around, cardboard tubes and boxes, plastic bottles and bottle caps, plastic forks and spoons, a broken coffee mug. Everywhere you look there is an object of waste waiting for a new purpose. In this course children will have the opportunity enhance perceptive skills by way of examining found objects for the countless alternative uses for creative expression. The magic happens when children respond to their imagination by creating sculptures, exploring surface design, or making collages, all which create narratives conveying a sense of playfulness and innovation.

For the young illustrator who has a flair for the stylized, humorous, or zany, this class will exercise both your perceptual skills and your imaginations! Part realistic drawing, part imaginative drawing, part character development, and part storytelling, this course guides students through the steps an illustrator must go through, from securing a client with a specific artistic task in mind, going through the planning stages and concept development or an illustration job, prototyping, and eventually, coming up with finished illustrations intended for publication in advertisements, books, and other print media.

Students begin their journey by creating a map of a place that exists only their imaginations. Through rich narrative, visualization and exploration, students visit and explore their fantastic places, elaborating on ideas and documenting discoveries via drawing from observation, collage, printmaking, fiber arts, and sculpture. An explorer’s notebook is the holding form for sketches and notes, and the artifacts created and placed on the map help tell the story of each students travels.

Grades 6-8. Designed for students who want to improve drawing skills and work towards more realistic drawings, this course focuses on drawing from observation. Students are guided through a carefully sequenced, step-by-step process designed to develop the student's perception and thinking skills. Based upon exercises in Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, this approach has been successful in improving students' ability to draw realistically, even for those who think they cannot draw. As such, it provides the young artist with an excellent bridge between drawing symbolically and working more realistically.

Course Description

GRADES 6-8: Who designs all of the colorful soda can labels, CD covers, cereal boxes and other graphic images that entice you to pick-up, try, taste and purchase favorite products? In this course, the designer is you. Using the basic drawing toolbox in the Mac lab, students use rendering skills (with a computer mouse), a scanner, the vast visual resources available via Internet, and text to create computer-generated packaging, advertisements, posters and promotions for real and fictional products. If you have a creative mind, a flair for text, and a love of computers, this course is for you. Note: For Spring term, no class on March 16.

Course Description

Grades 6-8. Students begin with the traditional self-portrait and an understanding of basic facial proportions, then branch into thematic and/or metaphorical ideas about self as the basis for composing expressive self-portraits that may or may not include a face. Students begin with observational work using mirrors and dry drawing media such as charcoal, pastels, and pencil. Once this foundation is established, various prompts will guide students to think about expressing themselves via self-portrait in unusual, meaningful, and innovative ways.

Grades 9-12- From books to posters, advertisements and album art, illustration is everywhere! Come learn the fundamentals of illustrating with wet and dry media, and how to take your hand drawn images through a digital process for print purposes. Young artists begin by responding to single image prompts related to newly acquired media techniques with emphasis on composition of content, then finish with designing a short children’s book or comic for print.
