Location: St. Paul's School. Grades K-2. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel to faraway places across the seas? Let’s ride elephants in Thailand, journey across the Pacific, travel by camel across the desert, and fly up to the moon! In this unpredictable and adventurous course, students open their eyes to the colors, textures and styles of the peoples and places around the world (and beyond). From the most remote mountains to bustling cities, students explore the contrasts and similarities of cultures and places around the globe. Working with their ‘travel companions’, students collaborate with classmates to select the places to which they will journey, creating art along the way.

This course focuses on ways that artists generate ideas and approach art making. Artists explore three approaches to drawing: from memory, imagination, and observation in order to express personally generated concepts. Course Description

Location: St. Paul's School. Grades 6-8. Learning to draw the human face and figure realistically can be fun, explorative and expressive. In this course, students draw from observation to learn basic proportional guidelines and techniques for drawing the face and figure. Beginning with quick gesture drawings, a sequential range of exercises is planned to sharpen students' perceptual skills and their understanding of the human form. Using both wet and dry media, students use each other and professional costumed models as subject matter for portraits and figure compositions. Students also have opportunity to view a variety of master figurative works from history as they explore expressive use of gesture, line, and color.

Grades 6-8: This course is especially designed for young artists who are interested in developing their skills in basic hand-building techniques to create both functional and decorative forms in clay. Using the clay work of different cultures and that of specific artists as inspiration, students create unique forms, patterns, and textures as they explore the possibilities and qualities of this very special medium. Once pieces have been fired, students will also have opportunity to explore the color and surface design possibilities of a variety of glazes.

Course Description

Location: St. Paul's School. Grades 9-12. In this course, students will utilize the MICA campus and its diverse structures—from ornate marble decoration and arched windows to sleek contemporary sophistication—as they explore the interesting nuances and compositional possibilities of interiors. In addition, students will take excursions outside to look at how landscape and the complex combination of both natural and man-made forms can offer endless possibilities for truly unique works of art. Emphasis will be on drawing from observation with a discerning eye for capturing a unique viewpoint of inside/outside surroundings.
